Equine Assistance Therapy (EAT)

Therapeutic riding uses equine-assisted activities for the purpose of contributing positively to the cognitive, physical, emotional and mental needs for people 2 to 102. Therapeutic riding provides all types of physical and mental benefits for our clients. Throughout the world, there are thousands of individuals with special needs who experience the rewarding benefits of horseback riding. A disability does not have to limit a person from riding horses. In our facility we have all the equipment needed so that almost anyone can enjoy the benefits of therapeutic horseback riding, including an adaptive saddle and a wheelchair lift.

Experiencing the motion of a horse can be very therapeutic for clients with physical or mental needs. Because horseback riding rhythmically moves the rider’s body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance and muscle strength.

Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic Riding utilizes certified riding instructors who teach clients with developmental, psychological or physical disabilities horseback riding and horsemanship skills. Therapeutic Riding uses the rhythmic, repetitive motions of the horse to improve the client’s balance, flexibility, posture, and muscle strength. Clients bond with the horse, which provides the motivation to be successful in their therapy.

Our Veterans Program

Limitless Riders Veteran Program's mission is to assist military personnel and veterans through services available at Limitless Ranch. Equine-assisted activity and therapy programs are tailored to address specific issues faced by wounded and traumatized military personnel, while also providing a supportive and therapeutic environment for their families and loved ones.  This holistic approach provides veterans an opportunity to rebuild their ability to connect with themselves and others, learn self-acceptance and exhibit more empathy with family and friends.

Benefits of Veteran Horse Therapy

According to CRC Health, horseback riding or equine therapy has been successful in helping patients show marked improvements in the following areas:
  • Assertiveness
  • Emotional awareness
  • Empathy
  • Stress tolerance
  • Flexibility
  • Impulse control
  • Problem-solving skills
  • Self-actualization
  • Independence
  • Self-regard
  • Social responsibility
  • Interpersonal relationships
  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Traumatic Brain Injury
Horses and veterans are similar in a few very important ways. Though the horse cannot speak, it is keen to understand a person's actions and body language. Both the veteran and the horse tend to be hypervigilant of their surroundings and potential dangers; both can use the actions and body language of others to determine situations.

The horse also can sense a veteran's pain, anxiety and fears, and is able to react to those feelings it is perceiving to steady the veteran's issues at that moment. I think, in a way, the horse can sense the sacrifices of the past and willingness to sacrifice for others in the veterans. The horses are willing to put their trust in such a creature, and a relationship between horse and veteran is built on that.
